Red Devils Go Into Winter Break Clearly Topping the Table

With a stout 3-0 victory over TuS Koblenz, the Red Devils cement their front-runners position, securing top spot one matchday ahead of the end of this season’s first leg. The 35,789 crowd at Fritz Walter Stadium saw Adam Nemec, Erik Jendrisek and Srdjan Lakic scoring the goals that earned today’s victory.

In the final game of the year, 1. FC Kaiserslautern welcomed TuS Koblenz at the Betzenberg on December 11, 2009. Marco Kurz’s side entered the pitch with the clear aim to pick up three points, securing the front-runners position through to next year. Head coach Kurz did not make any changes to the successful line-up which won five games in a row prior to kick-off. After partially rupturing his cruciate ligament in the game against Hansa Rostock, Bastian Schulz was sidelined. On the other hand, Sidney Sam, who has suffered a strain to his left thigh, was available for selection today.

Once the referee whistled play underway on a cold December eve, both sides made sure that they were not in the mood for Christmas presents. In front of an overwhelmingly acting home crowd, the home side roared off the blocks but had its trouble to find a way through the opponent’s defense. Nevertheless, it bore hallmarks of class as Adam Nemec slid onto Sidney Sam’s diagonal ball and smacked an unstoppable ball past TuS goalkeeper Yelldell with only 16 minutes on the clock. On 22 minutes, Alex Bugera curled in a corner kick, but Rodnei failed to burry the ball in the net only by a hairbreadth.

FCK - Koblenz

With the Red Devils clearly dominating the game, the visitors were lacking the creative force in their build-up play losing possession once and again. Concentrating on defense work, Uwe Rapolder’s side saw the home side creating scoring chances at regular intervals with Sidney Sam and the much-traveled Jendrisek causing confusion on the left side. On 32 minutes, Ivo Ilicevic forced TuS shot-stopper Yelldell to perform a stunning reaction save to deny his thundering shot. A few minutes in advance of the interval, the hosts could have made it two as Jendrisek failed to net after an excellent give-and-go with Nemec.

The pace did not drop after the restart as Erik Jendrisek heralded a new FCK offensive with a shot on the volley from 20 yards that only missed the target by the fraction of an inch (50). The guests warmed Tobis Sippel’s gloves after 56 minutes as Skela curled a free kick on goal just to be deflected by the Germany Under-21 shot-stopper who saved Skela’s second attempt. And the hosts reacted admirably, raiding right-back with Jendrisek catching a far kick-out by Sippel, seeing Yelldell leaving his goal trying to stop the Slovakian forward. The goalkeeper stumbled over his own team-mate Hartmann and Jendrisek just slot home.

Yelldell had to leave the pitch afterwards because of severe pain in his leg. He was substituted by Dieter Paucken. TuS Koblenz’s shot-stopper had the ball in the net from a delightful Jendrisek shot only to be ruled a fraction offside. Though the visitors were pressing for a goal now, FCK’s strong defense denied any effort and attempt. With 76 minutes on the clock, Srdjan Lakic took over from Adam Nemec. FCK forward Lakic, who had been absent for months due to a severe injury, capitalized on a brilliant Bugera assist and made it three ten minutes from time.

With their stout 3-0 victory over TuS Koblenz, the Red Devils cement their front-runners position, securing top spot one matchday ahead of the end of this season’s first leg, giving their fans a wonderful Christmas present.
