Red Devils Defeat Bavarian Lions Away From Home

On matchday 11, the Red Devils defeat TSV 1860 Munich 1-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich. With 33 minutes on the clock, FCK forward Erik Jendrisek scored the crucial goal that put his team in the lead. With 24 points from 11 matches, the Red Devils are back on the road to success again.

FCK head coach Marco Kurz had to do without Ivo Ilicevic, who currently is plagued by groin problems. Therefore, Kurz, the former 1860 Munich head coach, lined up Daniel Pavlovic to provide the support down the left channel. However, Sidney Sam, who was kept out of the DFB Cup match against Bremen on Wednesday because of thigh problems, was match fit again and appeared on the right side instead of Paljic. Both coaches opted for a 4-4-2 formation.

Once referee Kircher whistled the game underway on a sunny autumn afternoon in Munich, the visitors displayed their great determination, seizing the game by the scruff of the neck. The 4,000 FCK fans, who came to the Allianz Arena to support their team away from home, welcomed their team with red and white banners, singing familiar football songs. After a few minutes of cautious sampling from both sides, the game gained pace with both teams fighting fiercely and closing down space, leaving as little room as possible for the opponent. With 17 minutes on the clock, the Bavarian Lions created their first dangerous scoring opportunity as Mlapa gave his opponents the runaround before handing Lauth a golden opportunity. 1860’s team captain slotted home from a short distance. But the ball had left the field of play before; therefore, the goal was disallowed.

The guests, on the other hand, appeared in front of goal after 24 minutes, but Jendrisek was a bit too late to get the necessary drive behind the ball. Kiraly parried, but the ball bounced back to the field of play just to be caught by Sam who thundered it right back on goal, forcing the Bavarian shot-stopper to show another stunning reaction save. Though both teams made clear efforts, chances were few. With 33 minutes on the clock, Alex Bugera released Sidney Sam into space on the left. The young Germany under-21 national player lost his marker and entered the goal box, sending an excellent square pass back to Jendrisek who arrowed the ball into the net. With the lead under their belts, the Red Devils gained domination of the game, preventing the home side from creating chances.

FCK head coach Marco Kurz replaced Bastian Schulz by Jiri Bilek after the half-time interval. Though the hosts really tried to, they did not manage to overcome the Red Devils’ strong defense. The action died down midway through the second half with the visitors dominating the game and enjoying much the better of the chances. After 61 minutes, a Martin Amedick header flew on target, forcing 1860’s Rukavina to clear off the line. The Red Devils demonstrated fine build-up play, and the far-traveled Sidney Sam gave his opponents the runaround once and again.

The home side did not manage to create real chances, appearing in front of Sippel’s goal no more than two times during the second half. The Red Devils were in control of the match, displaying fine give-and-goes and creating dangerous situations. Five minutes from time, the visitors could have even made it a 2-0 away win as Amedick moved the ball to Sam, whose cross only missed Jendrisek by the fraction of an inch. The hosts made any attempt to equalize before the end of the game. 1860’s goalkeeper left his goal to strengthen the attack. However, the strong FCK defense and Tobi Sippel showed an excellent performance, not allowing the opponents to score at all. After the 1-0 away win, that earned them three important points, the Red Devils are back on track again!
