Red Devils Win in Cottbus

The Red Devils win their road game against Energie Cottbus 2-1. With Ivo Ilicevic and Dragan Paljic scoring the goals for the visitors’ side, 1. FC Kaiserslautern remains unbeaten on the 9th match day of the current campaign.

The team from Kaiserslautern was facing anything but an easy task on the 9th match day of the season. On October 16, 2009, the Red Devils and their fans visited FC Energie Cottbus at the Stadion der Freundschaft in Lusatia. FCK head coach Marco Kurz made just one change to the successful team that did not lose one single game so far. Instead of Erik Jendrisek, who clinched the first berth at a World Cup finals with the Slovak national team on Wednesday, Dragan Paljic was part of the starting eleven.

It was a tough and hard-fought game right from the start. Once the referee whistled play underway on a wet and cold evening in Cottbus, both teams made clear what they came for. The guests had their first scoring chance on 13 minutes, as a Rodnei header flew over the crossbar. No more than two minutes later, the hosts sent their answer, but Jula’s tough shot missed the target by the fraction of an inch. During the following ten minutes, scoring chances were few. Both teams fought fiercely. After 25 minutes, FCK forward Dragan Paljic caught the ball within the penalty area and fired on goal. Unfortunately, Energie shot-stopper Tremmel was able to save.

In direct and immediate response, Jula entered the Red Devils’ penalty area, sending a fine cross to Leonhard Kweuke who cannoned the ball into the net from 13 yards (27). Cottbus enhanced the pace, pressuring for the vital second goal. However, the team of FCK head coach Marco Kurz fought back, and demonstrated their team spirit. Seconds after Tobias Sippel had shown a stunning reaction save, the Red Devils scored the merited equalizer (45). Paljic outperformed his opponents, and fought his way towards Tremmels’ goal. He handed Ilicevic a great opportunity, and the young FCK winger thundered the ball into the net.

The sides turned round with the scores level, and the visitors’ second arrived duly ten minutes after the restart. Ivo Ilicevic flicked the ball on goal, where Tremmel was only able to parry it. Dragan Paljic was there to catch the rebound, and his brilliant shot on the turn marked the 2-1 lead on 54 minutes. The Red Devils dominated the game, whereas Cottbus did not even manage to warm Sippel’s gloves. Once again, the FCK defense was a real stronghold. However, the Red Devils failed to create dangerous chances at the other end.

After 75 minutes, the 1,000 FCK fans had reason to cheer again. For the first time after a five- month injury lay-off, Srdjan Lakic entered the field of play. A few minutes before, Kurz had replaced Dragan Paljic by Erik Jendrisek. Though Cottbus made any effort to equalize, the Red Devils kept them short of space until the final whistle. The trip to Cottbus ended in a merited 2-1 win under floodlights, and handed the still unbeaten Red Devils their third away win of the campaign.
