3-0 Defeat in Fürth

In their opening second leg game, the Red Devils lost 0-3 to SpVgg Greuther Fürth. The 7,350 crowd at Playmobil Stadium saw the home side power into a two-goal half-time lead through Müller and Nehring with the latter completing his brace eight minutes after the restart.

The first official match of the year 2010 handed the Red Devils a road game against Greuther Fürth where the second division pacemakers faced the cloverleaves on January 16, 2010.

Since Georges Mandjeck, who is currently representing his home country in the African Cup of Nations, and Ivo Ilicevic (ankle joint injury) were not available for selection, head coach Marco Kurz was forced to make changes to the starting eleven responsible for the six-point lead. Kurz lined up FCK’s two winter signings Markus Steinhöfer and Pierre de Wit, handing them their first Bundesliga appearance for the Red Devils.

Once referee Schmidt whistled play underway on an early Saturday evening in Fürth, the 2,500 FCK fans at Playmobil Stadium and Bastian Schulz, who took his seat among the FCK supporters in the away sector, saw the home side attacking the Red Devils’ goal for the first time after 15 minutes as Allagui and Schröck performed a nice give-and-go but were stopped by Amedick and Sippel. At the other end, Pierre De Wit released Adam Nemec into space. However, Nemec dragged his shot wide from inside the box. The visitors managed to gain more possession and the in-form Sidney Sam demonstrated his agility in front of the opponent’s goal. Nonetheless, the fans saw few dangerous scenes.

With 28 minutes on the clock, FCK defender Alexander Bugera performed a last-minute save to deny Allagui to put the hosts in the lead. On 32 minutes, a Bugera free kick caused confusion in Fürth’s goal box but Nemec’s header missed the target. During the closing stages of the first half, the game gained pace and the fans saw chances at both ends.

Greuther Fürth - FCK

Three minutes in advance of the half-time interval, the home side took the lead as Nicolai Müller ran clear and slot home past Tobias Sippel. And it came even worse for the Red Devils when referee Schmidt awarded a penalty kick against the visitors after a foul by Tobi Sippel against Allagui inside the box. Nehrig stepped up and converted the penalty earning his team a two-goal lead seconds before the break.

The second half began with further bad news for the visitors as Erik Jendrisek had to leave the field of play because of a pelvic contusion. He was replaced by Srdjan Lakic. As if that would not have been enough, Nehring completed his brace from a pinpoint cross by Nöthe only three minutes later. Afterwards, referee Schmidt interrupted the game as angry FCK fans threw snowballs onto the pitch. Stefan Kuntz, chairman of the FCK board of management, and team manager Marco Haber went to the fans in order to mollify them.

The match continued, but the Red Devils did not manage to find their way into the match and had to accept a 3-0 defeat in Fürth. Nonetheless, 1. FC Kaiserslautern stays at the top of the table. Marco Kurz and his team will now be looking forward to next Saturday when they will face Rot-Weiss Ahlen at the Betzenberg where they want to make amends for today’s defeat.
