FCK Loses to Augsburg

In the final game of the year, the Red Devils had to accept their first defeat away from home. Three days prior to Christmas, 1. FC Kaiserslautern loses 1-4 against Augsburg with Erik Jendrisek scoring the consolation on 69 minutes at the 23,134 full house at Impuls Arena in Augsburg.

In their final match before Christmas, the Red Devils had to face FC Augsburg in a road game on Monday, December 21, 2009. After six successive wins, the team from Kaiserslautern came to Augsburg brimming with confidence. However, the home side was absolutely up for winning infront of their home crowd to present their fans with three points in this year’s final Bundesliga second division game.

FCK head coach Marco Kurz put his trust in his very successful first-choice line-up again. With the support of an overwhelming crowd of 3,000 FCK fans, the Red Devils entered the pitch with the clear aim of picking up three points to lie underneath their fans’ Christmas tree.

Once play began on a bitterly cold night in Augsburg, the crowd was treated to a lively opening spell with both sides creating chances. With less than three minutes on the clock, the home side capitalized on sloppy work by FCK shot-stopper Tobias Sippel as Stephan Hain slot home putting his team in the lead very early. Raiding right back, the visitors appeared in front of the opponent’s goal, but Martin Amedick’s header missed the target by the fraction of an inch.

On seven minutes, Michael Thurk had the chance to add the second goal for his side but his thundering shot flew above the crossbar. The visitors enhanced the pressure, pressing for the equalizer – but were lacking the crucial determination. At the other end, Marcel Ndjeng catapulted the ball into the net and made it even two for the hosts. In contrast to the games before, the Red Devils had their problems to gain dominance and control the happening on the field of play. Ivo Ilicevic tried his luck from 23 yards shortly ahead of the interval, but FC Augsburg shot-stopper Jentzsch performed heroics to deny his thundering shot.

FCK head coach Marco Kurz did not make any changes to his team during the half-time interval. The home side’s defense, however, did not allow any attack to come to a successful end, destroying numerous attacks of the visitors. On 69 minutes, Marco Kurz replaced Jiri Bilek for Srdjan Lakic, to strengthen his side’s attacking force. And that seemed to be a waking call for his team as Florian Dick fed Erik Jendrisek with an excellent cross which the Slovak buried in the net. After having closed the gap, the Red Devils really pressed for the equalizer; unfortunately, it was the opponent who had the ball in the net a few minutes later as Michael Thurk netted after a rebound (75). The visitors could have reduced the arrears, but Jendrisek as well as Lakic failed to finally burry the ball in the net. A few minutes from time, sub Torghelle added the 4-1. Nevertheless, the Red Devils are top of the table, six points clear of second-placed FC St. Pauli.
