FCK Wins at Baltic Sea

With a 1-0 win against Hansa Rostock, their fifth in a row, the Red Devils cement their lead at the top of the table. Adam Nemec scored the crucial goal on 82 minutes.

On December 5, 2009, matchday 15, the Red Devils faced Hansa Rostock at DKB Arena in Rostock. FCK head coach Marco Kurz once again put his trust in the same eleven that defeated Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 in the top of the table clash at the Betzenberg on Monday.

Once referee Metzen whistled play underway on a cold and grey early evening at the Baltic Sea, the home side roared off the blocks and FCK’s defense was a shade fortunate not to fall behind with only two minutes on the clock as Tobias Sippel deflected a thundering shot on goal by Hansa Rostock’s Enrico Kern, before Rodnei cleared the second attempt on the line. The visibly on-fire home side seized the game by the scruff of the neck and began attacking the visitors’ goal at regular intervals. The Red Devils tried to restructure their play and gain more control of the action on the pitch. Nevertheless, it was by no means one-way traffic as Florian Dick sent a well-targeted cross inside Hansa’s box causing confusion in the hosts’ defense.

At the other end, the hosts tried their luck over the right side forcing the successful FCK defense around team captain Martin Amedick and shot-stopper Tobias Sippel to perform heroics once and again. With barely a quarter on the clock, FCK boss Marco Kurz was forced to replace his agile winger Sidney Sam who sustained a thigh injury. Danny Fuchs took over from the young Germany Under-21 national player. Pressing for the first goal of the match, both sides went on trying to find a gap in the opponents’ defense. On 32 minutes, Adam Nemec had the chance to put his team in front as he caught an excellent cross, but his header flew over the crossbar. At the other end, Schlitte took aim from fully 20 yards just to see his attempt being deflected by the tall Amedick. Raiding right back, Erik Jendrisek lost his marker on the right side firing a thundering shot on goal, forcing Walke to make a stunning reaction save to deny the Slovak. Walke had more work to do as a Rodnei header smacked against the underside of the bar, before bouncing on the line and away to safety in first-half stoppage time.

The second half started with a chance for the home side as Retov thundered a shot on goal, but Tobias Sippel saved capably. However, both sides displayed their fighting spirit in a fierce fight at the halfway line with none of the teams making their way towards the opponents’ goal box very often. After 65 minutes, FCK shot-stopper Tobi Sippel smothered a tough shot by Fillinger. The visitors showed a strong and highly committed performance but did not find the crucial gap in Hansa’s defense. Motivated by the support of 1,000 FCK fans, Tobias Sippel performed heroics pulling out another stunning reaction save to prevent Fillinger from netting on 75 minutes.

With 82 minutes on the clock, the Red Devils were awarded a free kick and up stepped Alexander Bugera curling in a brilliant free kick, and with Walke stationary on his line, Adam Nemec rose to power home from close range. The visitors didn’t let the grass grow under their feet in the closing stages of the game, cementing their lead at the top of the table. With five successive victories, the Red Devils move eight points clear of third-placed Arminia Bielefeld.
