Derby Win - Red Devils at the Top!

In an action-packed and enthralling derby, 1. FC Kaiserslautern defeated KSC 2-0 thanks to goals by Rodnei and Bastian Schulz. The Red Devils keep their record clean and make perfect a week of three absolutely successful matches. Now, the team of Marco Kurz is at the top of the table.

The huge 39,774 crowd at the Fritz Walter Stadium saw the still unbeaten and on form Red Devils welcome Karlsruher SC with no sign of exhaustion after three clashes within only seven days.

After having served his red card suspension that kept him out of the DFB Cup match on Wednesday, Ivo Ilicevic was back in the starting eleven in place of Dragan Paljic providing the support down the channels. Thus, Kurz lined up the successful and still unbeaten eleven again.

Before referee Kempter whistled the game underway on a wonderful early autumn afternoon, the West (Home) Stand performed a breathtaking choreography. The atmosphere at the Betzenberg was absolutely overwhelming. After ten minutes of cautious sampling from both sides, the game gained pace with both teams creating chances. With 16 minutes on the clock, the Red Devils started to drop heavy hints as to why they had gone eight official maches undefeated. Bugera gave his opponents the runaround before handing Ivo Ilicevic a golden opportunity. FCK’s number 22, however, missed the target by the fraction of an inch. Only two minutes later, the Red Devils appeared in front of goal again but failed to take the lead. However, the home side enjoyed much the better of the chances so far.

The heat turned up on 30 minutes with chances at both ends. First, KSC’s Stindl warmed Tobias Sippel’s gloves. At the other end, Sidney Sam forced KSC shot-stopper Miller to make a stunning reaction save. Three minutes in advance of the half-time interval, the home side took the lead in consequence of a set play. Rodnei, who was lurking within the penalty area, caught a Bugera free kick just to head home (42). The Betzenberg was burning when the rivals went to the changing rooms.

With the lead under their belts, the Red Devils reentered the field of play again after the break. And it took no more than seven minutes before they made it a two-goal lead. After a handball within the penalty area by KSC player Langkampf, referee Kempter awarded a penalty for the home side. Bastian Schulz kept his nerve and netted. There was no holding the fans when the Red Devils scored the 2-0 on 53 minutes.

And only a few minutes later, Erik Jendrisek appeared in front of KSC goalkeeper Miller with the KSC defense nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately, Miller was able to stop Jendrisek. Four minutes later, the onlookers saw the same situation again, and again Miller prevented the FCK forward from netting. The guests did not give in to FCK but were not able to overcome the FCK defense at all. Nine minutes from time, the ball crossed the goal line and passed Sippel, but two KSC players had strayed offside. The Red Devils keep their record clean and remain unbeaten.

The huge 39,774 crowd at the Fritz Walter Stadium saw an enthralling derby in front of an awe-inspiring scenery. Even after three games within only seven days, the Red Devils have not lost a whiff of their fighting spirit and will to win. The next derby is just around the corner: On Sunday, October 4, 2009, the Red Devils will meet FSV Frankfurt in an away game.
