FCK picks up Three Points in Hamburg

A 23,161 full house at the Millerntor Stadium saw an eventful match between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and FC St. Pauli. Thanks to goals by Martin Amedick and Adam Nemec, the Red Devils defeated the home side 2-0. Tied to Union Berlin, the Red Devils are at the top of the Bundesliga table now.

The scene was set for a real clash at the Millerntor Stadium. On Sunday, September 20, 2009, two strong-voiced fan groups, the front-runners and the third, the best attack and the best defense met in a real crunch encounter. About 2,000 FCK fans had traveled to Hamburg to support their team.

Due to the absence of Erik Jendrisek, FCK head coach Marco Kurz was forced to make a change to the successful squad that defeated MSV Duisburg last week. Kurz handed Dragan Paljic his first start for FCK in place of Jendrisek who is still suffering from a serious cold.

Once the referee whistled play underway on a pleasant early autumn day in Hamburg, the hosts dropped heavy hints as to why they are at the top of the table, tackling lustily and starting to attack the opponents’ goal right away. Until the 19th minute, the Red Devils were forced to underline why they are known for the best defense. After the home side had warmed Sippel’s gloves, FCK showed a first thrilling attack as Dragan Paljic outperformed his opponents and could only be stopped by a harsh foul within the penalty area. Referee Brych awarded FCK a penalty kick and up stepped Bastian Schulz. St. Pauli shot-stopper Matthias Hain, however, was able to parry (19).

Nevertheless, the Red Devils demonstrated their fighting spirit and were able to prevent the home side’s attempts again and again. In the 30th minute, FCK’s brilliant U-21 national team player Tobias Sippel showed a stunning reaction and saved his team from falling behind as Naki cannoned a thundering shot on goal. Afterwards, the men of FCK head coach Marco Kurz found their way towards the home side’s goal more often and the match became more open now. At that stage, particularly Ivo Ilicevic catered for some promising and dangerous situations. The spectators saw chances at both ends at minute intervals. Nemec outperformed his opponents and appeared in front of Hain to test him with a thundering shot which the goalkeeper parried.

The far-traveled Ilicevic handed Sam a golden opportunity three minutes in advance of the half-time interval, and Sam’s effort only missed the target by the fraction of an inch. Two minutes later, however, the Red Devils were awarded for their diligence. Team captain Martin Amedick caught a corner kick by Alexander Bugera and headed the ball into the net. Seconds later, the referee whistled and the Red Devils went to the changing room with a 1-0 lead.

The sides turned round with a 1-0 lead for the guest side and neither Kurz nor Stanislavski made any changes to the fiercely fighting squads. There was less action on the field of play after the interval. FCK’s defense prevented the hosts from getting going and showed fast-paced counter-attacks pressuring for the second goal. On 54 minutes, Dragan Paljic failed to convert a promising opportunity. After 61 minutes, Paljic was replaced by Pavlovic. The home side made any effort to score the equalizer but the strong FCK defense and a brilliant Tobi Sippel stopped St. Pauli once and again. Moreover, the Red Devils made chances at the other end. In the 70th minute, Daniel Pavlovic fed his team-mate Adam Nemec who did not hesitate to burry the ball in the net arousing great exultation among the fans from Kaiserslautern. Meanwhile, the 2-0 lead was absolutely well-earned.

Ten minutes from time, the situation heated up again as St. Pauli was pressuring for a goal now. In the 84th minute, referee Brych awarded a penalty against the guests and Bruns netted. Since St. Pauli was back in the race now, the Red Devils had to survive tantalizing minutes. The men of Marco Kurz, however, managed to prevent the hosts from equalizing and realized their aim to pick up three points at the Millerntor Stadium in Hamburg. The win takes 1.FC Kaiserslautern up to the top of the table.
