Goalless stalemate in Paderborn

On the fourth match-day of the season 2009/10, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and about 2,000 FCK fans had traveled to East Westphalia. On Sunday, August 30, 2009, the still unbeaten Red Devils wanted to pick up further points at the Energie Team Arena in Paderborn. FCK head coach Marco Kurz put his trust in the successful squad that did not allow any opponent to defeat them so far.

”Acting instead of reacting” – with this motto, Marco Kurz sent his team to the field of play in Paderborn. Once the referee whistled play underway on a sunny afternoon, the visibly on-fire side from Kaiserslautern made any effort to assume control right from the start. Nonetheless, the first scoring chances belonged to the hosts. The strong FCK defense, however, did a great job and prevented Paderborn from netting.

The Red Devils had their first promising chance on the quarter-hour when Ivo Ilicevic caught a rebound within the 18 yard box. The 22-year-old, however, did not manage to get the right drive to the ball and the leather cannoned wide of the bar. FCK clearly dominated the game, but it was the opposition that had the more promising scoring chances. However, neither Güvenisik nor Alushi were able to overcome FCK shot-stopper Tobi Sippel. At the other end, Erik Jendrisek missed a Masuch rebound only by a heartbeat.

The Red Devils did not stop to make any attempt to take the lead, but they were lacking the crucial precision in front of goal. Moreover, Rodnei was unlucky when he headed the ball off goal instead of on goal. A few minutes in advance of the half-time interval, much-traveled Ivo Ilicevic outperformed his opponents on the right side and sent a brilliant inswinger towards the center. Unfortunately, Holst was faster than Ilicevic’s team-mate; nevertheless, the attack almost ended in an own goal by Holst.

After the half-time interval, the Red Devils experienced an atmosphere that was close to home match atmosphere. Now, they could profit from the loud support of the 2,000 FCK fans that had come to Paderborn to strengthen their team. Less than two minutes after the restart, FCK team captain Martin Amedick, who was born in Paderborn, attacked the goal, but his shot from 13 yards only hit the side-netting. Afterwards, both teams tried to find the key to success, but none of the opponents scored the decisive goal. The Red Devils upped the tempo and enhanced the pressure. Nevertheless, they were still lacking the necessary final ball.

In the 65th minute, Kai Hesse came in for Nemec. It didn’t take long until Hesse had his first chance to become today’s man of the game. Unfortunately, he was stopped by the hosts’ wide awake defense. At the other end, SC Paderborn 07 had several dangerous set plays, but the strong FCK defense around shot-stopper Tobi Sippel smothered any effort. About 15 minutes from time, Kurz brought Dragan Paljic for Ivo Ilicevic – the Red Devils absolutely wanted to finally hit the target and win three points here. The guests pressed for the crucial goal and made any effort. The endeavors were without success and the Red Devils had to accept the goalless draw in the end. Nonetheless, 1. FC Kaiserslautern still remains unbeaten.
