Finally, the waiting was over and the first whistle was blown in the Fritz Walter Stadium on Saturday, the 8th of August 2009. In the first game of the new season 2009/10, 1. FC Kaiserslautern welcomed Greuther Fuerth on the Betzenberg. Except for the long-term injured, head coach Marco Kurz was spoilt for choice in his first Bundesliga game with 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

The crucial question about who would be today’s number one in the goal remained unanswered until shortly in advance of the kick-off. Eventually, Marco Kurz put his trust in U21 national team player Tobias Sippel. Moreover, with Rodnei, Schulz, Mandjeck, Ilicevic and Nemec, several new signings made their first appearance in a Bundesliga match with the Red Devils.

After having cautiously sized up the opponent, the Red Devils scored the goal that put them in the lead in the fifth minute already. Following a brilliant assist by Erik Jendrisek and a quite perfect through ball, Ivo Ilicevic scored this season’s first FCK goal. The new signing from Bochum - who was on loan with Greuther Fuerth most recently - left Louboué with no chance and scored the 1-0. FCK continued to attack the opponent’s goal. In consequence of a nice one-two by Mandjeck and Sam, Nemec failed to catch the cross only by a hairbreadth (13). Four minutes later, however, the ball hit the target again. Alexander Bugera converted a direct free-kick from 22 yards. His perfectly placed free kick cannoned into the right angle of the goal. It was not only Bugera’s first goal but most probably it was his most whished-for birthday present too. FCK defender Alexander Bugera turned 31 today.

In the 23rd minute, however, the guests had their first scoring chance, but Hrgovic’s attempt flew beside the goalpost. The players from Fuerth made many efforts, but they failed to find a way through the strong FCK defense. Thanks to their commitment and fighting spirit, Amedick and his team-mates went to the changing rooms with a 2-0 lead.

After the restart, the Red Devils moved ahead at an even quicker pace. In the 51st minute, Sidney Sam had the great opportunity to add the third goal after he and Adam Nemec had performed a wonderful give-and-go. Unfortunately, his thundering shot from 13 yards missed the target. Three minutes later, on the other hand, the Fuerth side managed to score the goal that put hem back in the game (54). Following a cross that flew into the goal box from the ride side, Prib had headed the ball to Sami Allagui who slotted home. Now, the game became more aggressive, because both teams really wanted to win the points here.

First, Mandjeck failed to hit the target (67) and a few minutes later, Loboué was able to parry a long shot by Kai Hesse. The next scoring chance belonged to Erik Jendrisek. The forward managed to catch the ball, headed on to him by Kai Hesse, but he was not able to burry the ball in the net in the end.

The strong FCK defense continued to prevent Fuerth from attacking the goal furthermore. Thanks to a strong performance, good combination play and the goals by Ilicevic and Bugera, the Red Devils gained their first three points and a well-earned victory in their first match of the new season.
